The Nature of Literacy in the Legal Profession
The legal profession comprises of individuals that are among the most eloquent users of the English language to communicate. Many legal settings employ the use of specialized forms of communication to present and analyze information. Writing is the main form of communication that lawyers use to present their information and persuade others while representing their clients. The ways of presenting or analyzing information in the legal profession are concise and contain the element of clarity. Additionally, there are set standards in the legal profession which literacy must conform with. In often time, the legal system will provide special guidelines to communication undertaken by lawyers.
The literacy used by lawyers is a product of the history of the language of lawyers, which is based on the use of old English. It employs the use of old vocabulary such as manslaughter, witness, writ among other forms of words used in the legal settings. Besides the use of old vocabulary, this form of language utilizes alliteration; where spoken words begin with the same sound. The use of alliteration in the legal language makes communication not only poetic, but also makes phrases and words easier to remember. This has become a tradition in the legal profession and has resulted in the creation and use of long lists of words joined by conjunctions
