I. Description of Project

Writing an adequate review of the literature is a critical part of any research project. Think of this as your first step in writing your proposal – to learn what research has previously been done on your topic and to frame your research question. Reviewing the literature is a valuable tool to help you to refine your question. Doing so will help you to understand how the question has been framed before and what answers have been suggested by previous researchers. Reading reports by other researchers on your topic should help you to identify your variables, develop a hypothesis, and think concretely about your methodology. You are required to find at least 5 sources of information related to your topic. Some of these references may address methodological issues while others may help you to develop a theoretical framework.

For each piece of literature, you must be familiar with the hypothesis, major findings, methodology, and any other information that you believe is relevant for understanding your research topic. Your literature review should not be an annotated bibliography merely describing each piece of research in summary form and then moving on to another article. I do not want to see one paragraph per article. Instead, you are required to think about the information obtained by the articles collectively and organize your findings logically. This assignment encourages you to think critically about the research you are reading. You might want to think of this review as telling a story about what has previously been done on your topic. In this story you will want to convey to the reader (your professor) what previous researchers have found on the topic. Some questions to answer include: What theoretical framework(s) influence their work? Is there agreement or disagreement in researching findings? If there is disagreement, what are the contrasting arguments and findings?

II. The Assignment

• Write a 5-6 page, double-spaced, typed paper.

• Write a review of the literature on any criminal justice topic of your choosing

• Use a minimum of five (5) sources. These sources must come from academic journal articles. Most should be recent (within last 5 years).

• Include a typed bibliography at the end of your text. This bibliography is NOT considered part of the 5-6 pages.
