Submissions should be double-spaced, with a 12-point font and 1 inch margins. I also expect that your papers will be grammatically and punctually correct. Do your best to proofread and spell check! If you have trouble in this area, please visit the writing center in the library for assistance BEFORE submission.
When you submit, please type the section and the number of the question you are responding to. You do not need to retype the question, but be sure and make note of which section and which question you are responding to (for example, “Part 1, Question 2).
The most important aspect of this assignment is your ability to discuss these issues and questions sociologically using a critical perspective. You should also include specific examples from the readings and discussions when possible.
Finally, be sure that when you respond to questions in Part 2, you are not simply summarizing the readings. Rather, you are integrating concepts into a thoughtful and concrete sociological response.
Part 1: 2 Points Each – please respond to each of the following questions in approximately half of a page.
- According to the Edin and Kefalas article, what are some of the structural and economic factors that impact marriage beliefs and practices among young women in poverty?
- Drawing up the Raley reading, offer a counter-narrative to the commonly held belief that early pregnancy and parenting causes poverty.
- What does Furstenberg argue is problematic about promoting marriage as a means for improving family stability and disadvantage? What are his ideas for improving family stability?
- Drawing upon Ann Ferber’s ideas for fighting oppression, discuss a few ways that her strategies can be applied to our discussions about families in this class. You may link to any one or two topics that we have covered throughout the semester.
