Sustainable Economic Development
Course Description:
Sustainable economic development addresses the balance of development and environmental impacts in the context of meeting current and future human needs while protecting the environment. The course allow students to consider challenges and strategies in both developed and developing economies. Beginning with the market failure resulting from not including environmental impacts in cost calculations, this course explores the competing models of economic development, the environment, and population growth.

Paper requirements
In this paper, select a policy or program designed to realize the goals of sustainable economic development. The focus can be local (for example, California’s financing of specific projects) or global (for example, a Climate change agreement). The goal(s) of the program should be articulated and economics explained. In addition to defining the unit of analysis (for example, jobs created in CA or tons of carbon reduced), present possible methods that can be used to evaluate the policy or program (for example, cost-effectiveness analysis). Just talk about one policy or program.
For the paper, one should demonstrate command of material found in an upper-level undergraduate economics textbook. For the five to seven page paper, five to seven sources from leading economics journals (peer reviewed) or academic book publishers should be included.
