We all communicate with others all the time — in our homes, in our workplaces, in the groups we belong to, and in the community. No matter how well we think we understand each other, even when we speak the same language, effective communication with people of different cultures is especially challenging. Our culture influences how we see, hear, and interpret the world, how we approach problems, and how we interact with others in groups and in communities.
Share an interesting experience that you communicated with someone of a different cultural background. How did the verbal and/or nonverbal communication affect the way you interpreted the message? Was the nonverbal communication consistent with the verbal communication?
Remark: Please read the instructions carefully and respond to the specific questions. Sometimes the questions require your understanding of the concepts/materials covered in the assigned readings, and your response will reflect how much you understand the materials.
For example, in DT2, you’re asked to “share an interesting experience that you communicated with someone of a different cultural background. How did the verbal and/or nonverbal communication affect the way you interpreted the message? Was the nonverbal communication consistent with the verbal communication?” You should first read chapter 2 to understand what verbal/nonverbal communication is and use the concepts to help you analyze your case and illustrate your point.
While it is not difficult to write a 300-word long response, it is not easy to address all the questions in a short response clearly and concisely. Furthermore, be sure to use check your grammar and mechanics before you post the message, as these aspects will be considered for grading.
