1. After reading from Jefferson and Adams’ works, think about the role that the writings of our nation’s founders played in shaping the structure of our society. The Declaration of Independence is obvious here, but other writings also tell us a lot about our country. How are the ideas in these documents evident in the character of American society in 2013? How have we departed from these original ideas about the ways in which people and government should interact? Ideally, choose an “angle” for your essay, rather than writing generally about “all” themes. Church and state, or taxation is examples, but the choice is yours. Remember to use quotes from/references to the documents in your answers. Write in formal, academic style.
