The texture/COLLAGE project is a culmination of all you have learned this semester. As you remember, texture is one of the Elements of Art. You will also bring your knowledge of the Principles of Design and Color Theory to bear on this project. It is also an opportunity to play a little as well as to insert your own interpretation into a design.
OBJECTIVES:
Technical: To use a range of materials in a manner that integrates them seamlessly, yet in surprising ways. To display skill in using familiar materials while also experimenting with new media. To create a design which integrates a variety of textural elements cut from different sources.
Design principals: To apply skills thus far developed in the use of color, elements of art and principles of design. To make appropriate design decisions in the service of communicating an idea, with particular sensitivity to the emotional and psychological effect on the viewer. To interpret a piece of text visually and determine visual cues that advance an audience’s understanding of the text. To convey a mood without illustrating the narrative nature of the text. For inspiration, look at the work of artist Romare Bearden. You can also look at design magazines, magazine covers and the artwork of collage artists.
PROBLEM:
Create a design which captures the feeling and mood of a poem from the list provided. Design should utilize composition and color skills acquired through previous assignments. Texture is an important element in this project. You don’t want the work to become 3D, but variety in texture will add interest to the design and show that you can work with a range of materials. Take a look at how Romare Bearden integrates textures into his collages.
PROCESS:
1) Choose a poem from one of the poets on the list provided. You can locate these online or from books. Books will offer a greater selection but online sources are easy to access.
What is the overall feel or mood of the writing? You can isolate specific images that seem to jump out at you while you’re reading but don’t try to illustrate these images in a concrete manner. The reader of the text can use his/her own imagination when viewing your design. Don’t get too caught up in small details – instead – focus on your overall impression. For example, can you characterize the writing as upbeat? Mysterious? Dark? What sort of color scheme comes to mind that could best convey the flavor of the text? Is the writing choppy, smooth, harmonious? What principles of design could best capture the feel of the writing? You want your visual to match the character of the text, so would a busy, crowded composition be appropriate, or would an open, airy composition be better suited? Review your terminology lists on color for ideas on emotional/psychological impact. Review also the principles of design and consider visual choices such as rhythm, movement, triangle, radial symmetry, etc.
2) Think about the poem and generate some ideas and thumbnail sketches of possible compositions and color schemes. Keep in mind what you understand about the effects of color, both spatially and emotionally. To unify your composition, you will want to limit your range of colors.
3) You will need to collect and create some materials to use for your design. Your collage will consist of cut papers and/or other 2D materials that can be glued to the picture plane. You are encouraged to use a variety of materials but try to steer away from overly childish art materials such as cotton balls and glitter. Some good examples include: painted or drawn textures that you have prepared ahead of time, a variety of papers/cardboard, any texture that can be glued down to the surface of your board. You may not use textures or anything else printed from the computer. NO unaltered or recognizable magazine or newspaper image. First, these are NOT textural and secondly, used in their pure form, they do not require you to use your own creativity. Consider unusual materials if appropriate for the effect you’re looking for. You can crumple paper, tear up maps or photos, add a piece of old carpet, fabric, sand, dirt, rice, beads, toothpicks, plastic wrap, thread, string, rope, barbed wire, balloons, bread, wax, bones, fake fur, funny money. Your entire design will consist of cut and paste. You may find that some heavier objects need glue that is stronger than Elmer’s or a glue stick.
4) Create both flat space and illusionistic space in your collage. Remember how flat, local color reinforces the two-dimensionality of the picture plane while modeled color invites the viewer into what can appear volumetric and three-dimensional.
5) Besides the planning, this project is a good one to approach with spontaneity – once you’ve gathered together your materials, you might just lay them out in front of you and play around with the arrangement. Experiment and have fun.
6) Using your 15 x 20” black mat board, lightly mark out a 1.5 – 2 inch border all around. Then attach your materials inside your border. If you prefer, you can glue the materials to a separate surface and then attach it to the board afterward. Materials you may need include glue, rubber cement, glue stick, etc. as needed; exacto knife/fresh blades; scissors; metal ruler/straight edge; other materials based on your planned design.
For further inspiration, look up other collage artists.
When you post your design, you will include a written portion. Write in complete sentences and prepare your responses in advance, then copy and paste to the forum when you post your project photo.
1 Include your poem here.
2 Who is the poet? What is the poem about? What mood do you feel that the poem conveys and how did you try to capture it in your design?
3 What interesting textures did you use?
4 What principles of design did you use and why? How does your composition convey the feeling of the poem?
5 What color scheme did you use and why? How does the color scheme support the mood you were trying to create?
6 Explain your use of flat and illusionistic space.
7 In what ways do you feel you could improve your project?
This written presentation will be in lieu of a formal critique. You are still encouraged to provide comments and feedback to your classmates.
