Exercise: The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) Paper

Write a 2-3 page paper (typed, double-spaced, 1” margins, black 12-point Times New Roman font) on either the advocates or opponents of the Equal Rights Amendment (of the 1920s). Follow the instructions below.

1. Provide in your introduction an overview of the debate (discuss the class backgrounds and the claims, in general, of both sides).

2. Provide in your introduction a thesis statement in this format: Equal Rights Amendment advocates were generally (insert description here) who supported the proposed amendment because (insert overarching reason); or Equal Rights Amendment opponents were generally (insert description here) who fought against the proposed amendment because (insert overarching reason).

3. Identify in your introduction your main points that connect to this “overarching” reason (the points that you plan to discuss in your paper).

4. Include in the body of your essay a discussion of your main points.

5. In your last body paragraph discuss the consequences of the ERA debate on feminism in the United States.

6. Include a conclusion that summarizes your thesis and main points.

7. DO NOT use sources other than those sources assigned for this class. Refer specifically to at least TWO of the PRIMARY SOURCE DOCUMENTS FROM THE DOCUMENT PROJECT “Who Won the Debate over the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1920s?”to receive a passing grade. IN ADDITION, draw from both the Cott essay and the Sklar introduction to receive a passing grade.
