Vocal fry is a phenomenon that has grown more and more common among young women. It is a sound characterized by low vocal vibrations, and usually comes in the speech of some women at the end of a statement. Also known as glottal fry, vocal scrape, and creaky voice, vocal fry has been a major discussion in the literature related to musical and clinical work since at least mid-twentieth century (Okrent). According to Khazan, the effect of a vocal fry is produced by a slow flicker in the vocal cords, which results in a creaking sound from the lower parts of the vocal register. Studies conducted suggest that at least two-thirds of college women use vocal fry in their speech, with an increasing number of adolescents subconsciously adopting this pattern of expression (Tess).
