WRITING PROMPT 9
Tufte says that in PPT, actual informative and analytical narrative becomes disrupted into disjointed slides and fragments, that PPT “abbreviate (s) the truth to make words fit” Do you agree. Why or Why not?
It is true that PowerPoint information and narratives are disrupted and disjointed. To be able to deliver information appropriately by use of PowerPoint, it is necessary to have a narrative into a point form summary. PowerPoint slides only have the design to take in information in the form of points or summaries. The bullet form is intended to give designers opportunity to organize their narrative in short and easy to follow format. Any information irrespective of the size will be broken down into point form in order to fit within PowerPoint slides. Just as the name applies, slides are intended to take in brief information.
The format of PowerPoint cannot allow for narrative or the constant flow of information, which is why the researchers adopted bullet format. Although this method is useful for working with a slide in PowerPoint, it disrupts the logical flow of a narration or information. This disruption may end up changing the original meaning of the intended information to the audience. If the explanation the presenter does not offer an explanation on a particular point, it is very easy to miss the intended meaning of the narration or information. Disjointed points are prone to misinterpretation and may raise confusion. This confusion is typical in cases where several points are put into consideration on a narrative. It is easy to mix up the narration or information due to the constant disruptions on a given bulleted list. In addition, since they are open to interpretations, a bullet list ends up becoming vague and creates the impression of disjointed words.
In conforming to PowerPoint, slide format, it becomes mandatory to summarize and fit a narration into a list. A narrative of significant content ends up losing its original meaning in attempts to make it fit with the slide format. Such misinterpretation arises as one has to change the original words have and sentences
