Final Paper details: The final paper is on a topic closely related to the course subject matter. Students choose their own paper topics in consultation with the professor. Guidelines for the final paper: 1. Select a topic: The topic should be developed out of a subject discussed in class or class readings, although this is not required. I must approve the topic. 2. Begin by reading about your topic. You must use the readings from class but you are welcome to include outside sources as well (this is an analytical paper, but not a research paper). If you do outside research use only reputable academic sources or well-researched reporting. “Reputable” reporting sources might include The New York Time, BBC News, or magazines like Harper’s or The New Yorker. Planetizen.com is a great resource for locating articles, and many reputable blogs are acceptable. If in doubt, run a source past me first! 3. Develop a critical question or issue you want to analyze in your paper. 4. Once you have a project focus, develop a one-paragraph thesis statement. Tell me what you plan to explore in your paper. This thesis statement should show that you’ve already started to do your reading and have a good idea of how your paper will be organized. 5. Write your paper! The paper must be 8 pages long, double-spaced, with 1” margins. It needs a catchy title, sources cited throughout the paper, and a bibliography of at least three sources from our class syllabus (this can include questions asked on a field trip, films, and guest speaker talks—be sure to cite these types of sources in your bib). Please include any relevant images and links, but be sure to explain how that material illustrates/substantiates the points you are making in the paper.
