Described the lung sounds noted during auscultation on the patient with pleural effusion, provided that the effusion is located in the right lower lobe.

Assignment 2: Mini Case Study

By Week 2, Day 5, respond to any one of the three exam questions assigned by your facilitator. Make sure you use the APA 6th edition style guidelines. Your facilitator will discuss the best responses to all the three exam questions with the class, which will help you refine your clinical skills.

Before you submit your response to the exam question assigned to you, save a copy of your response in a Word document and post it to W2: Assignment 2 Dropbox.

1. A 6-year-old boy is being readied for discharge from the hospital. He was hospitalized with asthma for four days and will be using a nebulizer and metered dose inhaler at home. Develop a discharge plan that focuses on patient education, the use of the metered dose inhaler, and when the patient should use the nebulizer.

2. You are taking care of a 65-year-old patient who has recently been diagnosed with interstitial lung disease. He has never smoked in the past. He reports that he may have had some exposure to pollution in his prior occupation as a building inspector. His pulmonary function tests are consistent with restrictive airway disease versus obstructive disease. Describe the typical signs and symptoms of a patient with restrictive airway disease and how it differs from patients with obstructive airway disease. List the common causes of restrictive airway disease. Also mention how the diagnosis is typically made.

3. You have been asked to see a 70-year-old female patient with emphysema who has been diagnosed with a pleural effusion. She is thin, barrel-chested, and is using pursed lips for breathing. Considering all of the potential etiologies of pleural effusions, describe the lung sounds that you might auscultate on this patient if the effusion were located in the right lower lobe.
