Topic Description & Audience Analysis

1. Summarize your topic for the Analytical Recommendation Report. Include the following in your summary:

• Describe a community or UMUC campus problem that you would like to solve in your recommendation report. In a paragraph or two, explain what the problem is, who is affected by the problem, and what possible solutions you think might solve the problem.

(Note: You will develop the problem section and solution section more fully and with research materials to write the Analytical Recommendation Report.

2. Summarize your intended audiences (those who will read your analytical recommendation report)

• Primary Audience – In a paragraph or two explain who your primary audience is (this includes the people who have authority to consider your recommendations and either accept or reject your solutions). Describe the primary audience’s profile (demographics – age, gender, education level, personal traits/characteristics, etc.) and the audience’s information needs (genre expectations – report format, level of formality, report structure, report components and content, length, level of detail, etc.)

• Secondary Audience – Explain who your secondary audience is (this includes the people who are affected by the primary audience’s decisions to accept or reject your solutions). Describe the secondary audience’s profile (demographics – age, gender, education level, personal traits/characteristics, etc.) and the audience’s information needs (genre expectations – report format, level of formality, report structure, report components and content, length, level of detail, etc.)

• Tertiary (General) Audience – In a paragraph or two explain who your tertiary audience is (if you have one – this would include anyone interested in the topic (problem & solution), such as stakeholders or community members, but who are not immediately affected by the primary audience’s decisions to accept or reject your solutions). Describe the tertiary audience’s profile (demographics – age, gender, education level, personal traits/characteristics, etc.) and the audience’s information needs (genre expectations – report format, level of formality, report structure, report components and content, length, level of detail, etc.)
