Democracy
Democratic principles have proved that man is yet to come up with a better way of governance. Despite proponents of democracy crying foul of failed attempts to introduce and try out uncommon ruling styles, not much attention has been paid to the heavy cost that standards of democracy has caused. Democratic ideals laid out in governance structures have not lived up to their expectation to transform and make the society a better place.
Winston Churchill’s claim that democracy may not be the best structure of governance may not be further from the truth. Modern critics have taken note that developing countries that embrace western values and political systems of democracy have had experiences of chaos and social disorder. A case in point is China’s administrative system that has enjoyed calm even through the most turbulent times.
Introduction of the principles of democracy in Russia after the collapse of Berlin Wall in the late 1980s have seen the nation take a drunken way forward with no clear national agenda. Egypt’s elections after the fall of Hosni Mubarak’s administration was treated as a winner-takes-it-all scheme in which the Brotherhood administration dashed hopes of any improvement in the living standards and economic progress through democracy. The result is that democratic principles have taken an awful damage in the public eye. Citizens identify themselves with their leaders much easily. Lack of appropriate knowledge on other forms of governance cannot justify them to be considered unworthy.
