Assignment 8: Argument Analysis Essay, First Draft
The purpose of this assignment is to draft a complete essay using the rhetorical mode of argument analysis.
Assignment Directions:
Draft a 2-3 page argument analysis essay, based on the below prompt:
• Summarize the main argument(s) from one of the assigned essays, using a combination of quotation, paraphrase, and summary. Next, determine whether or not the argument is effective, by analyzing the rhetorical techniques used.
Assignment Requirements:
For this assignment, you should:
• Summarize the main argument(s) of the essay, using summary, paraphrase, and direct quotation.
• Analyze the use of argument techniques. Does the writer utilize ethos, pathos, and logos effectively? Why or why not?
• Write your own thesis statement, which you support throughout the entire essay. (This will most likely state why or why not the author’s argument is effective.)
• Write topic sentences for your paragraphs.
• Write supporting details for your topic sentences.
• Organize your essay effectively.
• Write in Standard Written English.
Assignment Formatting:
• Write your name, course title, instructor’s name and date at the top of the document.
• Type in a Word document with 1-inch margins on all sides.
• Double-space your assignment.
• Use a standard font (Times Roman or Arial) in 12 point size.
• Include only one space after periods or other punctuation marks.
• Indent your paragraphs, with the first line being 5 inches from the left margin (using the Tab key).
